Young people in India draw extreme reactions. Even those who believe they are totally unbiased can be otherwise, albeit unconsciously, at times. Some have become so cynical about the current generation; they feel there is no hope for them.

“Changes are never gradual,” our perspective is gradual, as we see it happen. Indian society has not changed at a gradual pace. It is dynamic. If we had perceived these changes rightly, then it would have included many more sections of society in its fold. Then the transformation would have been even more phenomenal.”

How can the young Indians take the country to even greater heights? “Youth today are very bright and sharp. What they need to work on is an increase in communication between them – with masses, government and the international fraternity. Not only will this enhance their own levels of thinking and subsequently their contribution to society, it will make them worthwhile to the end users, which maybe industry. They must show that they add value to what ever pursuits they take up in their lives.”

One can’t help but wonder, what is the defining factor that sets the current crop apart from the previous ones? It is “They can extricate different elements of a problem and decide accordingly. They are less emotional, more practical. They are a bunch of forward looking youngsters and set standards for their own performances. They have great determination and I think they will lead India to heights beyond what people can imagine today.”

I feel that the change is largely due to the unrelenting hard work students put in. admittedly, they have unlimited opportunities, but we can’t shy away from the fact that the previous generation was submissive. A statement that might ruffle a few feathers, but that’s a fact he says we can’t deny.

A great thing that has been noticed in the present generation is that though the thinking youth of today respects his parents, but this doesn’t stop him from voicing his feelings. This was definitely absent earlier.

We cannot deny a lack of constant devotion, commitment. This ambitious lat has a tendency to flit from one job to another. There is less emotion, more motion.

Frankly speaking, do they care about anything beyond themselves? It is a common complaint that they are too self-centered. “Sometimes they don’t even think about their family! The need of the moment is blend of practicality and emotions. If they put in more thought increased concern for those who don’t have access to resources and the power structure then we will be a truly great society. Concern for society cannot be corporatised, it has to be individualized.”

Students must evolve interest in literature, music, and drama, forestry - then their education will become truly wholesome.

“The concept of independence has undergone sea change. Today, it reflects a vibrant country, a society that generates itself and believes in one world. This generation appreciates its freedom. But maintaining it is great challenge for them, as they are riddled with economic, political and social problems.

Their sacrifices have to take place in the present context. Different sacrifices are required now – youngsters just have to be competitive, global, innovative and accommodative.

“Most of us are confident of the present generation – they love their country, have a vision for their country. If they do well for themselves, the country will do well, too,”
